China began with basic animism, where they worshiped animal spirits. Most of the world has done this. Next Taosim formed, though most consider it a philosophy as it originally had no deities. Later on, gods and goddesses are added. Next came Confucianism, which also had no deities at first. Then Buddhism was introduced, and more recently the other main religions of the world.
