Cabling Factors and Tools
When performing a cable installation there are a lot of things that you have to put into consideration. You want to draw up a plan first and some things that you would want to include in the plan would be where your telecommunications rooms are located, what the distance from your leased line to your core router will be, and the types of cable are you going to be using and for what. Cost is always a factor but not when it comes to quality when you are designing a network. Fire protection, types of cable and the service coming to the building all play a vital role in the type of function your network will have. You want to make sure your racks in your telecommunication rooms are grounded properly, and that they have the proper temperature controls and humidity so you are not coming back to a flooded mess or a big static shock as soon as you brush up against or touch something metal. You want it to be useful but you don’t want to lose everything in a telecommunications room because you failed to plan ahead for accidents that can happen.
Now that you have your plan and it has been approved you need to know how to get the cable from the backbone to the end user. What types of tools are you going to need? If you are going to run CAT 5e throughout the building you will need several different tools; such as cable pulleys, punch downs, wire cutters, and cable strippers. There will be a few different tools you will need if you are putting cable into a preexisting building including but not limited to a cordless drill (hammer drills are great because they can drill through brick quite easily to get new cables into a building), fish tape or fiberglass push pole and even some unconventional tools such as crossbow and twine. It really depends on the type of job you are going to be doing and what type of cable or fiber you are going to be working with. This will determine what tools you will need to get the job done correctly and safely.
