Greece was not a country. The Greek people existed in over 2,000independent city-states spread around the Mediterranean and BlackSeas, from Sicily to Asia Minor, which formed shifting alliances.They were in virtually continuous wars between themselves and withexternal states. Some lost, some won each war. Greece waseventually absorbed into the Roman Empire by the 1st Century BCE.
