It is commemorated by the Marathon athletic run of 26 miles, replicating in a way the run of 9,000 Athenian warriors who, after beating the Persian infantry at Marathon, had to run back to the city to defend it against the Persian cavalry which was being rowed around to attack the city in their absence.

It would be interesting to see today’s athletes doing the run in sandals, carrying armour, shields and weapons. Most would not be up to the feat of the hardy peasant farmers, who had already fought a battle at Marathon that morning.
